Valentine's Day - Part 2...and A Tutorial

Valentine's Day, as I mentioned on my last post, was quite a day for the Crosby household. In review, for the first part of the day, I made Trevor heart shaped cinnamon rolls for breakfast and he was super excited, as seen on my last post, found here. But....

I had the opportunity to surprise him since he had to work that day. So, I built him a fort!!! I know, we're like, five years old. But seriously, who DOESN'T love forts!?! Come on...

Anyways, the fort was really simple to build and I was able to use supplies that I had around the house. I'll give the tutorial after I tell the rest of the day :)

So he got home, roses and chocolate in hand (and I know you're thinking...WOW, cliche. But he's never gotten me chocolate and red roses before so I think that's allowed...once!) and I made him close is eyes and led him into the living room where the fort was.

I spread candles and decorations all over the coffee table and had his card and his other present sitting there waiting for him.

Once I showed him, we got dinner going. The menu:

Ugly Steaks from a local Deli
Fresh Asparagus, grilled with butter and garlic salt, then topped with freshly grated Parmesan Cheese
Grilled "Baked" Potatoes
Lemonade with heart shaped Ice Cubes


 All I did for the red ice cubes is take a little Lemonade and add red food coloring and poured that into the heart ice cube trays.


The food was delicious, the lemonade was awesome and then we got into our jammies and crawled into the fort for the rest of the evening. We grabbed Trevor's iPad and watched one of our favorite shows, Psych, and relaxed. It was perfect. And cheaper than going out! Score.

ALRIGHT! The fort idea came from...you'll never guess....Pinterest...from another blog, found here. They do an awesome job of explaining how to built the fort. But essentially you will need:

Hooks
Rope or Broom Stick
Large sheets, Blankets, or large pieces of fabric
Pillows
Decorations
String
Straight Pins
Safety Pins
Thumb Tacs

How I did mine:

I used those screw in hooks and placed two in the ceiling. I took a rope and tied it between the two hooks with the access hanging behind the fort. Then I took two large sheets and draped them over the rope; one on each side of the rope. I used some straight pins to secure the sheets to the rope. Then I took some string, safety pins and thumb tacs and opened up the sides of the fort. Fill with blankets and pillows, decorate and that's it!

(I realize that my explanation is not great, but I would visit the original blog and maybe mine will make a little more sense. I also realize that my pictures of the actual fort kinda stink. That's because my husband tore it down before I could capture awesome pictures to post. Learning curve.)

Valentine's Day - Part 1...and A Recipe

Well, I don't know about you guys, but our Valentine's Day was pretty awesome. First one married and with a house. It rocked.

I was fortunate enough to have the day off which was even better. Trevor and I decided to stay home and make dinner instead of going out to save money, which opened up the opportunity for me to surprise him when he got home! First off though, I wanted to make him breakfast since I don't do so well with the dinner foods and figured he would end up doing the majority of the cooking that evening. So, I made him heart shaped cinnamon rolls. Mmmmmm...delish :)


The recipe for these is pretty simple, and the best part is that you do them overnight so that you don't have to spend two hours before breakfast cooking! Bueno.


 They turned out really cute.

Overnight Cinnamon Rolls
Adapted from Original Recipe from Allrecipes.com 

DOUGH:
1 cup milk
1/3 cup butter
1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
1/2 cup white sugar
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
2 tbsp butter, melted

FILLING:
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Heat the milk in a small saucepan until it bubbles, then remove from heat. Add the butter and stir until melted; let cool until lukewarm.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the milk mixture. Add the sugar, 3 cups of flour, salt and eggs; stir well to combine. Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and supple, about 8 minutes.
  3. Lightly oil a large mixing bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  4. Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and roll into a 10x 14 inch rectangle. Lightly brush the melted butter all over the top of the dough. In a small bowl combine the cinnamon and 3/4 cup brown sugar and sprinkle over the rectangles. Roll up the dough into a log and seal the seam. OR a heart if you want to be uber cute. 
  5. Cut the dough into 12 equal pieces; place the pieces in a greased 9x13 inch baking pan, or 12 inch deep dish pizza pan. (I used two 9" round pans). Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator to rise overnight.
  6. The next morning, preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Take the rolls out of the refrigerator and let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  7. Bake the rolls for 25 minutes or until golden.
FROSTING:
3 oz cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar 
1/2 tsp vanilla extract 
1/8 tsp salt 
  1. Beat it all together!
  2. Spread on freshly-baked cinnamon rolls. 
THAT'S IT! They were awesome. 

Happy husband!! Cinnamon Rolls are his favorite.


Ok, and I just thought that was really funny. I'm Russian and my brother in law always calls me Communist, Commie, Comrade, Russian, and other various random Russian names. So, this was very fitting.

My Hubby

It's been 10 days since I've blogged....sorry guys. Again, another crazy couple of weeks at work and at home. But, I made good tips last week! WOOT.

Anyways, with Valentine's Day coming up and whatnot, I wanted to share a little bit about my husband with you. His birthday is also less than a week away so this post has been on my mind for a while.

As I mentioned before, my amazing husband, Trevor, is a photographer. And a good one, at that. Something that he feels God is leading him into is Prophetic Photography. For those of you who don't know, being prophetic and moving in the gift of prophecy is something that we believe God gives you as a special gift to use to convey His desires or to share His heart with others. There are two kinds of prophetic words God gives: Words of Knowledge, which is a word about something from someone's past or current situation, or a Prophecy, which pertains to the future. Trevor definitely has the gift of prophecy, and his heart is to use his gift of photography and combine it with prophecy to share with others God's plan for them and His desire for their life.

So far, Trevor has received words for two of our friends, and completed the pictures that go with the words that God shared with Trevor for them.

Both images alone are incredible, but add the fact that God is using Trevor's gift as a catalyst to impact people's lives is amazing. In both images, the word is hidden is parts of the image...I bet you guys can find both words and read them if you look hard enough!

What is even more awesome is that both words hit home to Carla and to Dustin when they read them. As a testament that God does speak, there was no way that Trevor knew the circumstances that were surrounding these two individuals and for him to give them both the words he did shows that God loves us and wants to speak to us and share with His children.

Grab Bags

I don't know about you, but I LOVE sales. I would have to guess that no less than 95% of my clothes were bought on sale or clearance. Or with a gift card. Anyways, one way that you can get a great sale is by grab bags. Although, the hard thing is most of the time you never know what you're going to get.

I got really lucky. I stopped my Michael's to get some yarn for a project that I want to do (I'll post later) and they had $2 Grab Bags filled with clearance merchandise. What was even better is that they filled up their normal plastic shopping bags (to the max, might I add) so you could see through some bags and peak into others. Now, I know the whole point of a Grab Bags it you take what you get, but when most of the bags look like they're filled with red Christmas bows and gold monogrammed stationary, I wanted to get a little picky. And it TOTALLY paid off.

Here's the gooooood stuff I got:


Lots of rubber stamps, cling on stamps, a few rhimestones, some notecards, pencils and a chain bracelet!!! Yes, please. A few duplicates but they will make good gifts for friends that craft. Definitely worth two dollars right there.

But here's the stuff that came that I'm not so crazy about....


Well, paying two bucks for stuff all the stuff that I can keeping was WELL worth it. Anyways...wanted to share. Go find some good grab bags now!!

Squash and Coffee

Alright...again I have neglected my blog. And here is my reasoning...if I can offer an excuse.

I have to clarify something that I posted previously: In my first post, I wrote about how I wanted to start a blog, and how it would be the perfect time to because I was only working Premier and did not have another job. Well, that is not true anymore.

Here's the story! It's a long one. And I'm not one for Reader's Digest Versions.
I worked for Target for exactly 5 years. Like, my last day was my 5th anniversary to the day (December 27th). Anyways, the majority of that time Starbucks was my main work center, and that's the way I wanted to keep it. I was a cashier first, got trained at Starbucks after 6 months of getting hired and then officially moved departments after 9 months of having my job. I still cashiered, did guest service, and bakery, cake decorating, and anywhere else they wanted me, but at my second store especially they kept me mainly in my little corner making coffee (I know you may be thinking...TARGET HAS A BAKERY!? Well, Super Targets do and my second store was a Super. Super DUPER!). Ok, so after years of diligent service and multiple attempts to promote to a better position than just a specialist, that doesn't get paid to be stressed out more than a normal employee, I got fed up and decided to start re-evaluating my future there. I started there with the intention of staying there long term, promoting, and whatnot. Target was my very first job. I was committed! But I also was not expecting to be a 21 year old married college grad homeowner. It was a little much for the retail lifestyle that I had been dealing with. Trevor, the supportive hubby that he is, thought that leaving Target was a good idea as well. Of course, the money manager of the marriage, he was concerned about loosing that income. "I have Premier though!" And his sensible self convinced me that I should get something until Premier is more of a full time thing for me. So I had something lined up to start on January 2nd, put in my notice at Target the week before Thanksgiving and gave them 5 weeks notice. I'm the dream employee, right?! I also got my job offered back to me about 5 times my multiple people. Anyways....three days before my last day at Target the job I had lined up fell through. Merry Christmas to me.


For obvious reasons, I was faced with two choices at this point: recede my resignation and take my job back at Target (which I was told by a few different people was readily available to me if I wanted it..they really liked me there) OR look for another job. After a lot of prayer on Trevor and I's part, and a lot of talking, we both felt that me leaving Target was the best and healthiest solution. But then I need to job search. The idea of this scared the living day lights out me! I had not interviewed with people I did not know for over 5 years! Terrifying. But I got over it...obviously.




Logically, the logical choice for me to apply at is....duh. Starbucks. So I did of course, logically. Ha. Anyways I got desperate and spent the evening of my last day at Target frantically looking into positions at Starbucks. Trevor was at a wedding working so I had time. And then he brought me flowers. See :)





I applied to the 5 stores closest to my house (the number 5 is coming up a lot in this post....weird.) and after a week had not heard anything, I got nervous. You would think that I would be pounced on like a pinata at a child's party. But no.

But alas! I got a call on the morning of January 4th from a Starbucks that is not close to my house, asking for me to come in for an interview. She explained that after so long applications get sent to all the stores in the district, etc, etc, and that's how she found me. I was open to it. The second Target that I worked at was 13 miles from Trevor and I's house, and this Starbucks is about 2 miles closer so it was worth a shot. I scheduled an interview for the next day.

I got there and everything went really smooth. My interview was two questions, then we chatted for a few minutes and my Store Manager, Shayna, job offered me on the spot after a 10 minute interview. I started the next day. Now that's how it's done, friends! WHAT.

Now, it's not exactly what I wanted but I have been really enjoying my job thus far. I feel as though working for Starbucks is a much better fit than a Target Starbucks. I have already been told that I could get promoted to Shift Supervisor immediately but there isn't a spot available right now, and the team I work with is great. Plus my brand loyalty to Starbucks is far in few. Win. Win.

Anyways, my schedule has been a little crazy lately and thus, I have not had a lot of extra time left in my schedule. I'm not so sure that I'm cut out for this blogger thing.

I have a couple things I wanted to share other than my story.

First, I did a top knot for work today, and it was really difficult to do it with my clip in extension. Just saying - hiding those clips that everywhere on your head is tough. It turned out alright though.


Don't worry...I was at a stop light. :)


Second - The Squash part of my post!


I tried this squash at a friend's house a few weeks ago and it was awesome. It is really sweet and super simple. Unfortunately I couldn't get the recipe from her so I winged it. It tasted just like hers! That was a good sign. Here's the ingredients:

-2 Acorn Squash
-2 cups Brown Sugar
~12 Vanilla Wafers, crushed
-2 tbsp Butter

THAT'S IT!! So easy.

Directions:

Cook the acorn squash. It is alright if it's not 100% cooked, but better if it is. This can be done in two ways:

1. Cut in half, gut the seeds and place in a dish. Cook in the oven on 400 degrees for about an hour. Check periodically after 45 minutes to make sure it's not over cooked.
2. Cut in half, gut the seeds and place in a microwavable dish with about 2" of water. Place cut side down, cover with plastic wrap and cook in the microwave for 15-20 minutes.

Do you not need to add anything to the squash before it's cooked.

Once it's finished cooking, scoop the cooked squash into a large bowl and mash. Add the brown sugar, a little more than half the vanilla wafers and the butter. For the brown sugar, I used half dark and half light it was awesome. I love the molassesy flavor of the dark brown sugar, but thought that it would be too much to use all dark. But it's up to your taste preferences. Mix everything together and pour into a casserole dish. Place into the oven to heat the squash thoroughly. Depending on how hot the squash is still from cooking it initially, the time for this will vary. Do this at 350 degrees. If you had you oven on already at a temperature close to that, it should be fine. It will obviously just take longer or shorter depending on if it's warmer or cooler than 350.

Once it's done, you can either leave it in the cassorole dish or transfer into a serving bowl. Sprinkle the rest of the vanilla wafers on top. You can always add more if there's not enough for the top. I did :) Serve.

So easy, right?! This recipe can be halved simply also, or done with three squash, etc. That's why I love it!
